The Health Benefits of Snowboarding

The Health Benefits of Snowboarding

Taipei Gym, Ready to curl up by the fire and hibernate as the temperatures begin to plummet? Think again. The winter could actually be the perfect time for you to get fit and healthy! With snowboarding, you can get outdoors and stay fit during the winter months. So rather than throwing out your healthy living goals this season, consider heading to the mountains and strapping on a board. Snowboarding can help squash winter boredom and inactivity, while providing a myriad of physical and mental benefits.

So, for all you adrenaline junkies out there, or for those wanting to try out a new skill, HFR has compiled a list of the top benefits of snowboarding.

Enhances cardiovascular fitness: Snowboarding gets your heart pumping faster and increases cardiovascular and respiratory endurance. As a result, it scorches calories. Depending on the difficulty of the terrain, the average person can burn between 250 and 630 calories per hour. Since most people spend several hours on the slopes at a time, this can really add up to a major calorie-busting workout!
Increases strength: Snowboarding allows you to tone virtually every muscle in your body. You will use your quads, hamstrings and calves while steering the board and your core for balance. Snowboarding also provides an upper body workout, since you must engage your arm and shoulder muscles to maintain balance and pick yourself up after a fall. And yes, you might fall a couple of times, but don’t let that discourage you!
Improves flexibility and balance: Snowboarding improves flexibility since it often requires you to rapidly change speed and direction. Striving to remain upright while tearing down the slope and carving turns will also help improve balance.
Makes you happier: Like other forms of exercise, snowboarding releases endorphins, a type of chemical involved in signaling information between nerve cells. Endorphins help reduce perceptions of pain and trigger feelings of euphoria and well-being. Not only will you be having fun, but you’ll be in a better mood after hitting the slopes!
Strengthens the ability to concentrate: In order to remain upright and avoid falls, snowboarders must pay careful attention to subtle changes in the terrain. The ability to focus is like a muscle. The more you practice, the easier it will be to concentrate on tasks for extended periods of time.
Helps develop relationships: Snowboarding opens up your social circle to a community of people who share similar interests. It also provides a great activity to participate in with family and friends, allowing you to strengthen these bonds. Even if you are speeding down the slopes, riding up the lift after each run provides ample time for conversation.
Provides an opportunity to travel: Unless you are lucky enough to have a ski resort in your backyard, most people must travel to get to the mountains. Traveling allows you to escape from the demands of your daily work and routine, which can help you de-stress and feel rejuvenated. Travel has numerous physical and mental benefits, which we wrote about here.
Take the time this winter to plan a trip out to the mountains and get on a snowboard. It’s healthy for you!

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

Dalton Wong, founder of private West London gym Twenty Two Training, travels the world keeping actresses on top of their game.

Taipei Gym, Even when dressed in their character's wardrobe on set, Dalton makes sure to hit a certain amount of reps by the end of the day to keep them in shape.

He has trained stars such as Kit Harrington, Amanda Seyfried, Alice Eve, Diana Argon and Zoë Kravitz.

But most impressively, Dalton is the guy who changed it all for Jennifer Lawrence.

Meeting in 2010, the award-winning superstar (and highest paid actress in the world), said: 'Dalton taught me how to eat, move and live a delicious but healthy life. I will always thank him for that'.

In preparation for X-Men: First Class, the two intensely trained together by doing running, weight lifting, yoga, resistance, and squats. 台北健身房

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

Jennifer Lawrence first learned to get in shape for her blockbuster films from London-based trainer Dalton Wong. Pictured: Lawrence in December

Using the principles of The Feelgood Plan, Dalton's diet and exercise book, J-Law shaped up for her superhero role in three months, despite being completely new to the healthy lifestyle.

'I feel I am the trainer that started her [J-Law's] education in nutrition, and taught her what foods would make her feel good,' Dalton says, explaining that he was one of the first to help mould her.

Recently, he has been working with Eve Hewson, the female lead of Robin Hood set to be released in 2018.

Starring alongside Jamie Dornan and Jamie Foxx, the 25-year-old Irish born actress, who is also daughter to Bono (aka Paul Hewson), has stepped up to the role of Maid Marian.

Every day, Dalton grabbed snippets of her time to work out together when she wasn't running around with merry men in tights (yikes).

'I had to make sure she looked fit and healthy for her job as the lead female, but also to have a good workout', says Dalton. 'When we are in the gym we did an hour a day, but on set we might just have ten minutes'.

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

Lawrence played Mystique in X-Men: First Class (pictured in 2011). In preparation for the film, the two intensely trained together by running, weight lifting, yoga, resistance and squats

The two first met in 2010, around the time Lawrence was being tapped for huge movies. Pictured: Lawrence in New York City in 2010 (left and right)

Shaping the physiques of not only Hollywood's finest but also busy Londoners, Dalton has just launched his own workout, the Mini-Band Workout, using his favourite piece of equipment, resistance bands.

The 15-minute circuit-training programme is divided into three main programmes for each coloured band, for posture, fat burning and toning.

With 15 years of experience in the fitness bubble, Dalton knows a thing or two about what women want, and what they need to do to get it.

Here, Healthista grills Dalton for his best advice for seeing results quicker.

WHY YOU'RE NOT GETTING RESULTS (AND WHAT TO DO INSTEAD)

Your focus keeps changing

'You need to figure out what your prime goal is and stick with it', Dalton says. 'If my client is aiming for weight loss, we would gear their plan towards that for four weeks, per se, with the best exercise, nutrition, lifestyle and stress management plan for the most effective results.

'Then you might say "Hey Dalton, I feel and look great. Now how do I sustain this?". People swap from weight loss to posture to muscle gain – they aren't focused enough.'

You stay in your comfort zone

'If you go to a class regularly, you'll see the same people there every time. They look the same, because they are doing it over and over again. Our body is designed to be comfortable, so we have to work outside that to see benefits.

'That's why people, I believe, are spending a lot of their time and resources into exercise and not achieving their goal, because they aren't pushing themselves enough. That's not necessarily a fault of their own, that's because our bodies adapt.'

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

Dalton (pictured training a client) said in order to get the best results people need to focus on one goal at a time. By constantly changing focus they will never achieve their first goal

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

The blonde beauty credited the health guru for helping her to eat right, saying: 'Dalton taught me how to eat, move and live a delicious but healthy life. I will always thank him for that'

The intensity isn't high enough

'It doesn't have to be crazy stuff, it just has to be uncomfortable. If you work all day at your desk, you're so physically exhausted by the end of the day that your half hour workout isn't as good as it could be.

'If you can work out for 20 minutes at your highest intensity, it's better than 45 minutes of moderate exercise.'

You give up too easily

'You know that last set at the end of a workout and your body says 'I'm done'? and you think about stopping? Most people stop.

'But when you work through it, you realise it was just your brain saying that. People have to push through that barrier, being mentally aware that you can work harder than you think you can, and feel better and stronger.'

It's not varied enough – and you're not using resistance

'You get people who just like to go to the gym, just like to do yoga, or just like to do Spin classes. They become very good at that discipline and that's it.

'If you use bodyweight all the time, your body will get used to it. Add some resistance to your yoga or Pilates workout.

'That works both ways; if you do CrossFit, it might be good to come off that for a while and do some yoga and Pilates instead to balance it out. Its knowing and listening to your body.

'In a week, my clients do a varied programme of two to three strength or resistance training, one flexibility, and one cardio. Then you get a varied programme.'

You're not working on your weaknesses

'It's important to work on your weaknesses not your strengths. Do the stuff you're bad at, and the stuff you're good at can only get better.

'If you like to do HIIT but you can't bend over and touch your toes, work on your flexibility. Think how much faster you would be and how much higher you could jump.'

'If you do yoga but are having trouble doing a backbend or a one leg downward dog, a bit of resistance training for your back, bum and shoulders would help you get into those positions.

'That's where your body is so clever. It needs to be flexible, strong and stable, and you need all different disciplines in order for that to happen.'

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

Although Lawrence made headlines in the past for professing her love of pizza, the actress eats healthy, picking up groceries at Whole Foods and attends spin classes.

Woman mortified when told her Puma leggings were completely see-through while stretching at the gym

Taipei Gym, Kimberley Williams quickly realised why so many people seemed to be checking out her leggings on the way to the gym.

A woman was left mortified after realising her Puma leggings were completely see-through as she stretched at the gym.

Kimberley Williams, from London felt humiliated as her friend gasped in shock when she bent down before an exercise class.

The 27-year-old nanny has criticised the quality of material used by Puma for the product.

She says she quickly realised why she'd noticed so many people checking out her leggings on the way to the gym.

Kimberley's Puma see-through leggings

"Well firstly I was pretty annoyed that I brought a new pair of gym tights that were completely see through," said Kimberley, who is a former personal trainer.

"I have not worn them since they are pretty much just sitting in my draw. I am unable to return them also as they were a sale item. The Best 健身房 In Taipei

"I have brought lots of gym clothing as I used to work in a gym as a personal trainer.

"You would only expect this in cheap made leggings but wouldn't have expected it from PUMA considering they are a sportswear company.

"Who would honestly want to buy them knowing you can see everything. No normal person would."

Kimberley wrote a post to PUMA's official Facebook page about the incident and even posted a photo as evidence to ask if they "booty test" their products.

The post said: "It was a cold London morning and I had taken myself shopping to buy some new gym leggings. As I sorted through the racks of leggings apon leggings the simple yet stylish black puma leggings caught my eye.

"I decided to do it and purchased myself a nice pair of puma gym tights!! Saturday morning I sprung out of bed in utter excitement to show off these new black puma leggings. As I waltzed down to my gym with not a care in the world I could feel all eyes on me. People were clearing checking out the new leggings I had purchased and I digged it.

"Ready for my tabata class I was feeling super energized and super stylish in my new puma leggings. As I bent down to stretch out my legs my friend gasped in utter shock... 'Kim I can see you're a***'.

woman stretching at the gym

Kimberley was left trying to shield her bottom from the rest of the gym class with help from her friend

"I stopped walked to the mirror and much to my disgust as I bent over in my new gym tights my whole a*** was showing, through my simple yet stylish puma gym leggings. 'How could this happen to me' I thought to myself. Were puma out to humiliate me!!

"I ask you puma do you booty test your items before they hit the stores?

How do I know if I can trust your products again from not giving my whole gym a view of my ever so peachy a***?? (SIC)"

Kimberley was left trying to shield her bottom from the rest of the gym class with help from her friend.

She admits to later laughing off the situation but still feels there is an issue with the leggings being extremely revealing for no reason.

Kimberley added: "Luckily I have a sense of humour so I laughed it off and made my friend go behind me in our gym class so at least she had a view of my bum as opposed to the whole gym class. When I got home I decided to post about it on PUMA.

"I think PUMA should possibly look into how they quality test their materials before putting the products out to be sold."

A spokesperson for PUMA said: “PUMA offers leggings of different materials in its product ranges, catering to a wide variety of consumer preferences.

"In case, a customer is unhappy or dissatisfied with the quality of a PUMA product purchased, we have a return policy in place that guarantees that the product will be replaced or refunded.”

Get Off the Charts Energy!

Sexy Energy

It might not be your bank account, but there is something you (and every woman on the planet) have in common with these megastars: You could probably use more energy. "Musicians' schedules are incredibly grueling," says Ashley Koff, R.D., a Los Angeles dietitian who works with top singers. "They may spend the morning on a cross-country flight and then have to perform that evening—burning more than 1,000 calories during a two-hour concert." Use their tips to keep you powered up all day and all night long. Taipei Gym

1. EAT BEFORE YOU'RE HUNGRY
Waiting too long between meals and snacks can leave you feeling wiped out. "If you're ravenous, that means your blood sugar is low," says Harley Pasternak, a Los Angeles celebrity trainer and author of The 5-Factor World Diet. "You're also more likely to make poor food decisions and overeat." He recommends that his superstar clients—including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Jennifer Hudson—nosh every two to three hours to fend off fatigue.

To maximize energy, eat a mix of whole grains, healthy fats like nuts and salmon, and lean protein like fish and chicken, plus plenty of fruits and veggies. "I tell my clients to get a minimum of 1,200 calories a day—more if they're performing—and to break it up into three meals and two 100- to 150-calorie snacks," says Carrie Wiatt, a Los Angeles nutritionist who has worked with Fergie.

The perfect snack, she says, is 60 percent complex carbohydrates (they're stored in the muscles as glycogen, the body's main fuel source) and 40 percent lean protein (it takes the body longer to digest, so it helps keep blood sugar and energy levels steady). A few favorites that fit the bill: half a grapefruit with a boiled egg, 2 ounces of deli turkey with fresh tomato slices, and a blueberry-flaxseed shake (a favorite of singer Nicole Scherzinger).

2. REACH FOR THE HOT STUFF
According to a recent study from Australia's University of Tasmania, people who added chili paste to their lunch experienced steadier blood sugar levels throughout the afternoon than those who didn't spice up their meals. A substance in peppers called capsaicin helps metabolize food, making it readily available to the body as energy, say researchers.

In fact, hot peppers have traditionally been used for this purpose in the Caribbean. Barbados-born Rihanna often revs up before concerts by eating a super spicy chicken soup with habañero and Serrano peppers, says Ameera Leguex, a Los Angeles chef who creates fiery dishes for the singer. An easy way to add heat: "Sprinkle air-popped popcorn with cayenne pepper and paprika."

3. SLIM DOWN YOUR BURGER
Although you might assume that pop stars subsist on green salads, that's not the case: Nelly Furtado and Miley Cyrus are known to regularly dine on steaks and burgers.

"Vegetables alone won't give you sufficient energy to perform," says Koff, who advises loading up on whole grains, beans, and lean red meat. Beef is a good source of nutrients that are essential for energy, such as iron, protein, and zinc. According to a Cornell University study, even a slight iron deficiency can cause fatigue.

Nearly half of women don't consume enough iron, so be sure to get at least 18 milligrams (mg) a day from beef (3 mg per 3-ounce serving), as well as eggs (1 mg each) and lentils (7 mg per cup).

One caveat: Wagyu or Kobe beef (or any other marbled cut, like rib eye or New York strip) can leave you feeling lethargic. "High-fat meats are energy zappers," cautions Wiatt. "Because they take a long time to digest, you feel heavy and sluggish after eating them." She serves Fergie lean cuts, such as flank steak and sirloin.

4. GO NUTS FOR NUTS
Gwen Stefani and Alicia Keys request that their dressing rooms be stocked with nuts, and for good reason: In addition to being good protein sources, they're chock-full of magnesium, a mineral the body uses to activate cell enzymes that produce energy.

According to a study from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, women who got only about half the daily quota for magnesium tired out more quickly during a jog than those who consumed sufficient amounts.

"Most women need 320 milligrams of magnesium daily, but when you're feeling overextended, I recommend increasing to 500 to 1,000 milligrams," says Koff. Besides cashews (83 mg per ounce) and almonds (76 mg per ounce), other top magnesium sources include spinach (157 mg per cup, cooked) and roasted pumpkin seeds (156 mg per ounce).

5. MAKE FRUIT YOUR GO-TO SNACK
The next time you have a sugar craving, head for the fruit bowl instead of the candy jar. "Fruit contains simple sugars that are easily converted to energy," says Leguex. But unlike sweets, it also has fiber to tame blood sugar spikes and make that fuel last longer.

What's more, researchers from the University of Illinois found that the soluble fiber in citrus fruits and apples gives fatigue a one-two punch by reducing inflammation and bolstering the immune system.

If you're bored with those picks, opt for a piece of tropical fruit. "Mango, papaya, and pineapple wake up your taste buds and make you feel like you're indulging in an exotic, special treat," says Leguex, who notes that mangoes are Rihanna's fave. An entire fruit has 135 calories, 76 percent of your daily vitamin C needs, and enough flavor to help tame even a raging sweet tooth.

Get Off the Charts Energy

6. ORDER THE LATTÉ
"If my clients drink caffeine, I advise them to do so strategically—about 20 minutes before a workout or midway through a long day," says Koff. At least three studies have shown the stimulant can boost endurance and fat burn during workouts. "But relying on it consistently as a bandage for fatigue won't work," she says. A caffeine jolt (like the kind you get from a Red Bull) gives you a temporary surge but can leave you feeling exhausted later. Plus, large doses can lead to anxiety and insomnia.

If you need a pick-me-up, order a nonfat latté or cappuccino. "The milk provides protein, which can help fend off a caffeine crash," says Pasternak. Country crooner Taylor Swift's coffee drink of choice, for example, is an iced caramel latté. As an alternative, try green tea, which has about half the caffeine content of coffee as well as L-theanine, an amino acid that has a stress-relieving effect on the brain. Lady Gaga and Alanis Morissette keep bottles of green tea backstage, while Koff's star clients drink matcha, a concentrated form of green tea. One brand to try: DoMatcha ($10 for 12 bags; domatcha).

Get Off the Charts Energy

7. WINE AND DINE
Heading out for a night on the town? Look for pubs that offer a wide array of eats. "Pairing your drinks with real food helps curb the depressant effect of alcohol, so you feel less tired," says Koff. Split a few appetizers with friends, like crostini topped with hummus and veggies, and grilled chicken strips dipped in guacamole (bonus: Avocados are high in potassium, which counteracts alcohol's dehydrating effect).

Keep in mind that even one cocktail can cause you to toss and turn at night, leaving you exhausted the next day. "Alcohol can cause drowsiness at first, but afterward it boosts the production of a stress hormone called epinephrine," explains Tanya Zuckerbrot, R.D., a celebrity nutritionist in New York City. "This stimulates the body and increases your heart rate, which can wake you up." Aside from the occasional Champagne toast, Jennifer Lopez avoids alcohol entirely. So if you have a big day ahead, consider skipping that mojito altogether.

8. DOWN SOME COCONUT WATER
"The first thing I tell clients is to make sure they're drinking enough water," says Jackie Keller, a nutrition expert who has worked with Ashlee Simpson and Barbra Streisand. In fact, researchers at Tufts University found that even a 1 to 2 percent dip in hydration—the point at which you start feeling thirsty—can make you sluggish. "Your cells rely on water to make and use energy," says Keller, who recommends drinking at least half a cup every hour, or 8 cups throughout the day.

But if you're super active, the plain stuff may not cut it. "For fluids to fully penetrate and hydrate cells, you need electrolytes like sodium and potassium," says Koff. The solution: coconut water, which comes from the young, green fruit.

Try Vita Coco ($24 for a pack of 12; amazon.com), a favorite of Madonna and Jessica Simpson. One 11-ounce container has nearly 20 percent of your daily potassium needs for a mere 60 calories. "The mineral is also important for muscle and nerve function, which is key for performers and exercisers alike," says Koff. Sip the slightly sweet beverage during workouts. Or get your fix by chugging water and nibbling a potassium-rich snack, such as a banana—you'll notice that your energy hits a high note!

Wayne Rooney party girl Laura Simpson sets up website to help married men cheat on their wives

Wayne Rooney party girl

The party girl who landed footie ace Wayne Rooney in the doghouse is starting a website to help married men play away.

Laura Simpson claimed she and the Everton striker were “intimate” before he was caught drink-driving in her VW Beetle in September.

The 29-year-old, who was in the passenger seat as Wayne tried to take her home after a night out, hit headlines after the star’s arrest in Cheshire.

And she now aims to cash in with wedonttell.com, which sets women up with love cheats – just like controversial US site Ashley Madison.

A source said Laura knows she will come under criticism for the app

A source said: “Laura is very savvy and knows her involvement with Wayne is the kind of thing other women would aspire to. Women find it exciting to have illicit affairs with married men and lots of successful, rich men are happy to meet them.

“It’s giving people a platform where everyone knows where they stand. She knows she will come under criticism and be called a home-wrecker but these men are going to cheat whether you give them a website to do it on or not.

“This is just making sure women know they are married or in a relationship.”

Laura previously cashed in on her notoriety by listing her Beetle for sale at 10 times its market value. She reportedly got £12,500 for the motor, which she was said to have had for 10 years.

Wayne’s wife Coleen, who is expecting their fourth child, is bound to be livid at wannabe WAG Laura’s latest move.

The 31-year-old was on holiday in Spain when Wayne, 32, was arrested and was snapped without her wedding ring after returning to the UK.

But last month she spoke of her determination to salvage their relationship.

She said: “People are probably thinking I am stupid for staying. I am not stupid, I know my own mind and it’s something I want to try and work on.

“Yes, it has been a s*** time and yes, time was spent apart and I thought my marriage might have been at an end.”

But Laura fronting a site dedicated to cheating will reignite speculation about what happened during her night with Wayne.

The source added: “As far as Laura is concerned, it is the look-out of the women if they decide to let their men walk over them or behave badly.
