The Health Benefits of Snowboarding

The Health Benefits of Snowboarding

Taipei Gym, Ready to curl up by the fire and hibernate as the temperatures begin to plummet? Think again. The winter could actually be the perfect time for you to get fit and healthy! With snowboarding, you can get outdoors and stay fit during the winter months. So rather than throwing out your healthy living goals this season, consider heading to the mountains and strapping on a board. Snowboarding can help squash winter boredom and inactivity, while providing a myriad of physical and mental benefits.

So, for all you adrenaline junkies out there, or for those wanting to try out a new skill, HFR has compiled a list of the top benefits of snowboarding.

Enhances cardiovascular fitness: Snowboarding gets your heart pumping faster and increases cardiovascular and respiratory endurance. As a result, it scorches calories. Depending on the difficulty of the terrain, the average person can burn between 250 and 630 calories per hour. Since most people spend several hours on the slopes at a time, this can really add up to a major calorie-busting workout!
Increases strength: Snowboarding allows you to tone virtually every muscle in your body. You will use your quads, hamstrings and calves while steering the board and your core for balance. Snowboarding also provides an upper body workout, since you must engage your arm and shoulder muscles to maintain balance and pick yourself up after a fall. And yes, you might fall a couple of times, but don’t let that discourage you!
Improves flexibility and balance: Snowboarding improves flexibility since it often requires you to rapidly change speed and direction. Striving to remain upright while tearing down the slope and carving turns will also help improve balance.
Makes you happier: Like other forms of exercise, snowboarding releases endorphins, a type of chemical involved in signaling information between nerve cells. Endorphins help reduce perceptions of pain and trigger feelings of euphoria and well-being. Not only will you be having fun, but you’ll be in a better mood after hitting the slopes!
Strengthens the ability to concentrate: In order to remain upright and avoid falls, snowboarders must pay careful attention to subtle changes in the terrain. The ability to focus is like a muscle. The more you practice, the easier it will be to concentrate on tasks for extended periods of time.
Helps develop relationships: Snowboarding opens up your social circle to a community of people who share similar interests. It also provides a great activity to participate in with family and friends, allowing you to strengthen these bonds. Even if you are speeding down the slopes, riding up the lift after each run provides ample time for conversation.
Provides an opportunity to travel: Unless you are lucky enough to have a ski resort in your backyard, most people must travel to get to the mountains. Traveling allows you to escape from the demands of your daily work and routine, which can help you de-stress and feel rejuvenated. Travel has numerous physical and mental benefits, which we wrote about here.
Take the time this winter to plan a trip out to the mountains and get on a snowboard. It’s healthy for you!

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

Dalton Wong, founder of private West London gym Twenty Two Training, travels the world keeping actresses on top of their game.

Taipei Gym, Even when dressed in their character's wardrobe on set, Dalton makes sure to hit a certain amount of reps by the end of the day to keep them in shape.

He has trained stars such as Kit Harrington, Amanda Seyfried, Alice Eve, Diana Argon and Zoë Kravitz.

But most impressively, Dalton is the guy who changed it all for Jennifer Lawrence.

Meeting in 2010, the award-winning superstar (and highest paid actress in the world), said: 'Dalton taught me how to eat, move and live a delicious but healthy life. I will always thank him for that'.

In preparation for X-Men: First Class, the two intensely trained together by doing running, weight lifting, yoga, resistance, and squats. 台北健身房

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

Jennifer Lawrence first learned to get in shape for her blockbuster films from London-based trainer Dalton Wong. Pictured: Lawrence in December

Using the principles of The Feelgood Plan, Dalton's diet and exercise book, J-Law shaped up for her superhero role in three months, despite being completely new to the healthy lifestyle.

'I feel I am the trainer that started her [J-Law's] education in nutrition, and taught her what foods would make her feel good,' Dalton says, explaining that he was one of the first to help mould her.

Recently, he has been working with Eve Hewson, the female lead of Robin Hood set to be released in 2018.

Starring alongside Jamie Dornan and Jamie Foxx, the 25-year-old Irish born actress, who is also daughter to Bono (aka Paul Hewson), has stepped up to the role of Maid Marian.

Every day, Dalton grabbed snippets of her time to work out together when she wasn't running around with merry men in tights (yikes).

'I had to make sure she looked fit and healthy for her job as the lead female, but also to have a good workout', says Dalton. 'When we are in the gym we did an hour a day, but on set we might just have ten minutes'.

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

Lawrence played Mystique in X-Men: First Class (pictured in 2011). In preparation for the film, the two intensely trained together by running, weight lifting, yoga, resistance and squats

The two first met in 2010, around the time Lawrence was being tapped for huge movies. Pictured: Lawrence in New York City in 2010 (left and right)

Shaping the physiques of not only Hollywood's finest but also busy Londoners, Dalton has just launched his own workout, the Mini-Band Workout, using his favourite piece of equipment, resistance bands.

The 15-minute circuit-training programme is divided into three main programmes for each coloured band, for posture, fat burning and toning.

With 15 years of experience in the fitness bubble, Dalton knows a thing or two about what women want, and what they need to do to get it.

Here, Healthista grills Dalton for his best advice for seeing results quicker.

WHY YOU'RE NOT GETTING RESULTS (AND WHAT TO DO INSTEAD)

Your focus keeps changing

'You need to figure out what your prime goal is and stick with it', Dalton says. 'If my client is aiming for weight loss, we would gear their plan towards that for four weeks, per se, with the best exercise, nutrition, lifestyle and stress management plan for the most effective results.

'Then you might say "Hey Dalton, I feel and look great. Now how do I sustain this?". People swap from weight loss to posture to muscle gain – they aren't focused enough.'

You stay in your comfort zone

'If you go to a class regularly, you'll see the same people there every time. They look the same, because they are doing it over and over again. Our body is designed to be comfortable, so we have to work outside that to see benefits.

'That's why people, I believe, are spending a lot of their time and resources into exercise and not achieving their goal, because they aren't pushing themselves enough. That's not necessarily a fault of their own, that's because our bodies adapt.'

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

Dalton (pictured training a client) said in order to get the best results people need to focus on one goal at a time. By constantly changing focus they will never achieve their first goal

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

The blonde beauty credited the health guru for helping her to eat right, saying: 'Dalton taught me how to eat, move and live a delicious but healthy life. I will always thank him for that'

The intensity isn't high enough

'It doesn't have to be crazy stuff, it just has to be uncomfortable. If you work all day at your desk, you're so physically exhausted by the end of the day that your half hour workout isn't as good as it could be.

'If you can work out for 20 minutes at your highest intensity, it's better than 45 minutes of moderate exercise.'

You give up too easily

'You know that last set at the end of a workout and your body says 'I'm done'? and you think about stopping? Most people stop.

'But when you work through it, you realise it was just your brain saying that. People have to push through that barrier, being mentally aware that you can work harder than you think you can, and feel better and stronger.'

It's not varied enough – and you're not using resistance

'You get people who just like to go to the gym, just like to do yoga, or just like to do Spin classes. They become very good at that discipline and that's it.

'If you use bodyweight all the time, your body will get used to it. Add some resistance to your yoga or Pilates workout.

'That works both ways; if you do CrossFit, it might be good to come off that for a while and do some yoga and Pilates instead to balance it out. Its knowing and listening to your body.

'In a week, my clients do a varied programme of two to three strength or resistance training, one flexibility, and one cardio. Then you get a varied programme.'

You're not working on your weaknesses

'It's important to work on your weaknesses not your strengths. Do the stuff you're bad at, and the stuff you're good at can only get better.

'If you like to do HIIT but you can't bend over and touch your toes, work on your flexibility. Think how much faster you would be and how much higher you could jump.'

'If you do yoga but are having trouble doing a backbend or a one leg downward dog, a bit of resistance training for your back, bum and shoulders would help you get into those positions.

'That's where your body is so clever. It needs to be flexible, strong and stable, and you need all different disciplines in order for that to happen.'

Jennifer Lawrence's Gym Secrets Revealed

Although Lawrence made headlines in the past for professing her love of pizza, the actress eats healthy, picking up groceries at Whole Foods and attends spin classes.

Spring Break : Get Drunk Not Fat

Memorize these 4 key essentials to prevent you from destroying what you achieved at the gym and in the kitchen.

Get Drunk Not Fat

Taipei Gym, With the famous and notorious spring break among young adults coming along this time around, you should learn the various things to avoid that may kill your fitness progress or the details that can salvage it.

Drink enough water

I know I know. You will mostly be drinking alcohol and you will find it hard to drink water when your belly is constantly filled with booze, that will dehydrate you even further. Your muscles are primarily composed of water and so are all of your organs and skin. Lacking water intake will directly affect how well your body is working, so you will not only give your muscles the water they need, but also keep you from stuffing your stomach with junk food.

"Hey, but I heard that beer contains a lot of water" - Random Bro

Munchies curfew

Set a time where you forbid yourself from eating, since the food you will crave while on the influence will mostly not be healthy (skip this part if you carry healthy munchies on you at all times and actually eat them). If you know you will be out from 10pm to 5am, you don't need the calories McDonald's offers at 4 in the morning on top of all the empty calories found in your drinks.

Raving your muscles away

MDMA, speed, ecstasy and cocaine are all popular drugs present in events such as raves and house parties, I'm not teaching you something new. Anyhow, the usage of these recreational drugs, stimulants, will dehydrate you greatly, kill your appetite, increase your metabolism so your system will burn calories faster than usual, making your hard earned gains vaporize like a short and stinky fart. If you know you will be using any of those, eat during the day like you weren't going to eat at all during the party, and CARRY ABSURD QUANTITIES OF WATER.

Pick your poison

You know you are drinking to get wasted, might as well choose what you drink! Vodka, red wine, dark beers rum (without sweet cola) are all great examples of low fat / low carb drinks. The worst drinks to have are light beers, drinks mixed with other soft and sweetened drinks or energy drinks.

Oh, and don't forget to have fun! You aren't on Spring Break to count calories or calculate your macros, just follow these basic steps and practice safe sex ;).

Paris Gym Boat Will Give You A Tour And A Workout At The Same Time

Taipei Gym

Taipei Gym, Locals and visitors alike could soon be cruising along the Seine and taking in the riverside sights in a boat powered by their own workouts. The Paris Navigating Gym – a project led by international design and innovation office Carlo Ratti Associati in conjunction with leading fitness equipment manufacturer Technogym, the non-profit architecture group Terreform ONE, and the urban regeneration institute URBEM – reinforces the French capital’s commitment to sustainability and well-being.

The workout area on the 20-meter-long fitness vessel, which can accommodate up to 45 people, boasts a selection of Technogym’s ARTIS machines, a combination of sophisticated bikes and cross-trainers. When a user starts to turn or push down on the pedals, an inverter converts this exertion into utility-grade electricity, which is then used to power the user’s device. The exercise-generated energy is also sent to the gym boat’s electric propellers in order to move it through the water and across the city, picking up and dropping off people as it goes. Any additional energy requirements would be met with renewables, most likely photovoltaic cells on the roof, and excess energy would be fed into the city’s grid.

Taipei Gym

For Carlo Ratti, director of the MIT Senseable City Lab and a founding partner of Carlo Ratti Associati, the Paris Navigating Gym ‘provides one with a tangible experience of what lies behind the often abstract notion of “electric power”.’ Indeed, augmented-reality screens on the boat’s windows display to users information about both the energy their workouts are producing and, with the help of real-time tracking devices installed on the vessel, environmental data about the Seine’s water quality.

Taipei Gym

This floating, human-powered gym is usable year-round. Its transparent glass covering, which can be opened during the summer months, offers panoramic views of the banks of the Seine and the city beyond. At night, the boat could also be used for parties. From a design point of view, the newest addition to the Seine’s fleet references the Bateaux Mouches, the original Parisian sightseeing boats in operation since the early 20th century.

Terreform ONE first advanced the idea of a River Gym for New York in 2008, and the Parisian project is a natural evolution of that. Analysis by URBEM and UR Lab have ensured its feasibility.

Taipei Gym

Initial studies suggest that the Paris Navigating Gym could be operational in as little as 18 months. Its arrival, coupled with that of the recently proposed flying water taxis, could change the way Parisians interact with their river forever.

Women's Strength Training: Your Guide To A Sexy & Fit Body!

Taipei Gym

Taipei Gym, Most women never pick up enough weight to get a great training effect. If you're one of those women who think you'll get big and bulky from lifting weights, you need to dismiss that myth right now.

I have trained dozens of women and had them lifting hard and heavy, and that type of strength training had only improved their physiques. I had a lady who won the Mrs. Kentucky pageant (not a figure or bodybuilding competition) squatting her body weight and doing chin-ups.

Training With Heavy Weights

So here's the main point of this article: training heavy with the right exercises is the proper way to strength train and it will get you the best aesthetic results. Period.

Since you now know that lifting pink dumbbells isn't going to get you a lean, sexy and fit body, let's discuss what you should be doing in the gym.

1. Strength Train With The Proper Exercises

The best exercises to use are big, compound movements that recruit a lot of muscle mass. Here are some examples:

Lower Body

- Barbell Squat
- Barbell Deadlift
- Dumbbell Lunge
- Good Morning
- Split Squat

Upper Body Horizontal Pushing

- Push-up
- Dumbbell Bench Press
- Barbell Bench Press
- Incline Bench Press

Upper Body Vertical Pressing

- Military Press
- Dumbbell Shoulder Press
- Handstand Push-up

Upper Body Vertical Pulling

- Chin-Up
- Pull-up
- Lat Pull-down

Upper Body Horizontal Pulling

- One-Arm Dumbbell Row
- Seated Cable Row
- Bent-Over Barbell Row

Core Exercises

- Plank
- Ab Roller
- Hanging Leg Raise

If you spent the rest of your strength training career using nothing but the exercises listed above, you would build a lean and sexy body no questions asked.

You would also build a better body at a faster rate than if you used isolation exercises and machines.

2. Strength Train With The Proper Intensity

This goes back to talking about how most women never use enough weight. Without intensity you simply won't get a great training effect. So, what is the proper intensity?

I can't give you a number because everyone's strength levels are different. This is the best way that I can explain it: if you're going to do a set of eight reps, then that last rep should be tough and you should be able to complete one more rep (maybe two) but absolutely no more.

If you do eight reps on a set of squats but you know you could have done 12 or more, that is not intensity. You need to finish your sets knowing you could have done one absolutely no more than two more reps. It is that intensity that will actually challenge your muscles and help you build a lean and fit body.

To lift with even more intensity, you simply train in a lower rep range. Example: sets of five reps. To lift with less intensity, you simply train in a higher rep range. Example: sets of 12 reps. I'll tie all of this together later.

Taipei Gym

3. Strength Train With The Proper Splits

The typical gym trainee should only be using one of two training splits: total body workouts (which aren't a split at all) or upper/lower splits in which they train upper body one day and lower body the next. These two training splits are the only two the typical gym trainee with ever need.

These splits will allow you to train your muscles with enough frequency. Plus, you will be stimulating a lot of muscle mass each training session so your metabolism with be elevated longer. Furthermore, these two splits will help you build a lean and sexy body much faster than any other split. I'll provide examples later.

4. Strength Train Wisely

By this statement I am referring to using your time wisely. The only time I recommend doing straight sets (meaning you do all the prescribed sets and reps for one exercise before moving on to the next) is on lower body days.

After a hard set of squats or deadlifts you won't feel like doing anything except resting (or maybe doing some calf raises). In the case of total body workouts or upper/lower splits, you can pair or group exercises together. This will allow you to get more work done in less time; that is always a good thing.

Getting Healthy and Fit Body

taipei gym

Getting Healthy

Taipei Gym, Aerobic exercise protects you from illness in several ways. It reduces the risk of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. It also promotes weight loss, decreased blood pressure, a healthy ratio of "good" to "bad" cholesterol, lower triglyceride counts, and improved glucose tolerance.

Data from Duke University's "Studies of a Targeted Risk Reduction Intervention Through Defined Exercise" showed that a modest amount of moderate exercise—as opposed to a large amount of vigorous activity—is the best way to significantly lower the level of triglycerides, which are a key blood marker linked to higher risk of heart disease and diabetes.

STRRIDE also showed that as little as two weeks of inactivity raises a number of risk factors for heart disease, from weight gain to elevated cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

To be healthy, you should get moderate aerobic exercise for a total of 30 minutes most days of the week, according to the U.S. surgeon general. Aerobic exercise is activity such as walking, swimming, or biking that builds your heart and lung power. If you are confused and do not understand how to get in a gym environment, join our Core Space with an excellent coach and an expert in gym or fitness. #TaipeiGym #TaipeiFitness #CoreSpace

Increasing the intensity and frequency of your exercise will increase the health benefits.

Getting Fit

Exercising for fitness means that in addition to conditioning the heart, lungs, and circulatory system, you work all the major muscles of the body. The goals are to build strength and endurance, so that you can lift heavier objects as well as using the muscles for longer periods of time before they get too fatigued. You also work on flexibility, making sure that your joints can move and your body doesn't stiffen up.

To achieve the overall objective of fitness—being strong, supple, and healthy—the following types and minimal amounts of exercise are recommended:

Moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise for a total of 30 minutes at least three days a week
Eight to 10 different strength-building activities that work all the major muscle groups, two to three times a week
Stretching of the major muscle groups at least five minutes after each exercise session, when the body temperature and muscles are warm.
